How to Close or Complete Tasks and Events in Salesforce

Publish Date: Jun 4, 2026
Description

In Salesforce, Tasks and Events are both types of Activities. Unlike Tasks, Events cannot be manually closed—they automatically complete when the event date passes.

This article explains how to mark a Task as complete using different methods in both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience.

Resolution

Use the following steps to complete a Task in Salesforce depending on your interface and starting point.

Complete a Task from the Home Page

Classic

  1. Click X next to the task to access the task detail page.
  2. Optionally, add comments to the task.
  3. Click Save.

Note: The Status is automatically changed to Completed when X is clicked.

Lightning

  1. Select the checkbox next to the task subject.

Note: The Status is automatically changed to Completed when the checkbox is selected.

Complete a Task from Other Screens

  1. Click Edit.
  2. Set the Status field to Completed.
  3. Click Save.
  4. The completed Task is moved to the Activity History related list for its associated record.

Complete a Task from the Task Record

Classic

  1. Click the Task's Subject name to open the Task record.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Set the Status field to Completed.
  4. Click Save.

Note: Events are automatically moved to Activity History the day after the scheduled event date.

Lightning

  1. Navigate to the Tasks tab.
  2. Click the dropdown menu and select Open Task.
  3. Click the Task Subject.
  4. Click the dropdown menu and select Edit, or double-click the Status field and change it to Completed.
  5. Click Save.
