Receiving "Cannot find default record type of the appropriate type" when accessing a list view

When accessing the Contacts or Accounts tab an error is received that states:
Record type unavailable:
This is most likely due to a recently installed package not properly setting a default record type for an object that was installed.
To resolve this first check and make sure that every available object has a record type with (Default) after it on the profile. Once the offending object is found edit the record types and set one as default and save. Once this has been completed you should be able to access the list view.
