Salesforce ID field properties

Knowledge Article Number 000003004

I would like to know what specific properties has the Standard Salesforce ID Field.

All of Salesforce's internal ID fields, including the Account, Contact, Opportunity and Lead ID, are text-based, not binary. They are all 15 character base-62 numbers.

That means each of the 15 characters can be a numeric digit (0-9), a lowercase letter (a-z), or an uppercase letter (A-Z).

The ID Field is automatically system assigned, is not updatable. Also, the field is indexed.

Please note that it is case-sensitive, so two unique IDs may happen to only be different by a change in case. There are applications like Access which do not recognize that 50130000000014c is a different ID than 50130000000014C.
