Salesforce for Outlook: 'user is not authorized to send emails to this service' error message

Knowledge Article Number 000004180
Description

When trying to add an email using Salesforce for Outlook, users sometimes receive a bounce back with the error message 'user is not authorized to send emails to this service'

Resolution

Sometimes users receive a bounce back with the error message 'user is not authorized to send emails to this service' when using the 'Add email' button in Salesforce for Outlook.

This error message actually comes the settings selected in email-to-Salesforce, and it will happen if users attempt to add an email message from an address not included in their list of authorized addresses.

Users can find their authorized addresses under

Setup | Personal Setup | Email | My Email to Salesforce
OR
Click your name | My Settings | Email | My Email to Salesforce

in the list called 'My Acceptable Email Addresses'

Users must make sure this list includes all addresses they will add emails from. This problem can happen when Salesforce customers have more than one corporate domain (eg, @acme.com vs @acmeinc.com), and they have been set up in Salesforce with a domain different from the domain used by their Outlook/Exchange Server.
