Why did merging duplicate Leads generate an automated Lead Assignment email?

When 2 leads were merged using the Find Duplicates button, there was an assignment notification email alert sent to the lead owner.
This is expected behavior when merging Leads if the Master Record selected in the merge had a different Owner than the final, merged, Lead. This occurs because the Master record is the record which survives the merge process, and the merge caused the Owner of this record to change.
