Why are 'sorts' not working in my list view?

Why are "sorts" on picklist fields not working in my list view?

"Why is a text field not sorting correctly in My List View. The numbers in the field being sorting are not in numerical order."

 

For example:

"2080 Century Park East, Suite # 1804 comes before 2080 Century Park East, Suite # 203"

Issue:

Suite 1804 should come AFTER Suite 203

Resolution For the Picklist:

If you have inactive values in a picklist field and sort your list view based on that field; you may get unexpected results.

In order for the inactive picklist value to be sorted along with active picklist values.The order in the picklist needs to be alphabetized, then all active and inactive values will be presented in sequence as expected.

To do this:

1. Go to:

Setup | Customize | Opportunities (or the table that contains the field of interest) | Fields

2. Select the Edit link for the picklist field.

3. Click the reorder button and select the "Sort Values Alphabetically" checkbox.

The sort will now work with both the inactive and active values in your list view.

For the Text Field:

The text field when sorted reads each letter or number as a single character. Therefore, 2080 Century Park East, Suite # 1804 comes before 2080 Century Park East, Suite # 203 because it sees that the "1" in "1804" comes before the "2" in "208". It does not look at "1804" as a whole number, but breaks it down by each individual character.
