Resolution

We have investigated this issue further, and have confirmed that this issue is a side effect of the latest MS security patch that was recently released.  That said, the registry modifications mentioned on the MS article below do work to resolve this issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904

When testing the steps given, we did find one step that was missing in the article, which may also occur for other machines as well.  If the “Wordpad” option is missing from the mentioned path ("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\"), it will have to be created manually. To do this highlight the Applets key then right click and select New key. When the key is created type in the name Wordpad.

Once done, the other steps in the article should take care of the issue.
