WF rule triggered over and over again

Knowledge Article Number 000006734
Description

WF rule triggered over and over again although rule criteria says - "When record is created, edited and did not previously meet the rule criteria."

Resolution

1) Check if the record that triggers the WF rule has a foreign key relationship. For e.g. On an opportunity record, check if there is an Account field.

2) Check if this foreign key is being changed on the record and if that causes the WF rule to be triggered over and over again although  rule criteria says - "When record is created, edited and did not previously meet the rule criteria."

3) If yes, this is expected behavior.

4) Workaround: Create a checkbox field, say "Rule triggered?" on that record. Make it hidden so no one can see and edit it. Default value should be set to false.

5) Go to the WF rule and add one more criteria - "Rule triggered?"=false

6) Add field update for the WF rule and set "Rule triggered?"=true. This will ensure that the WF rule is not triggered over and over again even if there is a foreign key on this record.
