Chatter Desktop client is no longer visible on screen

Description

When the Shared Local Object file gets closed out when the Chatter Desktop has been moved off the screen / dual monitor is disconnected, it's possible that the SLO file "remembers" the client as being off screen.

Upon opening Chatter Desktop client, users may see it flash but then disappear.

This could also be related to cookies, IE settings, or even a corrupted file in Adobe Air or Chatter Desktop cached files

This Article applies to both Windows and MAC users

 

Resolution

Steps to resolve Chatter Desktop visibility issues:

Windows Users:

1- Close your browsers such as Internet Explorer or Firefox

2- Uninstall Chatter Desktop and Adobe Air from Control panel

Windows Vista and Windows 7:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features\

Windows XP:

Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs

 

3- Navigate to the following location and delete the Air folder
 

Windows Vista and Windows 7:
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\

Windows XP:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Adobe\

4- Next Navigate to the following location and delete the "sfdc-desktop.*" folder

What is the Shared Local Object (SLO) and where is it located?

The shared local object stores persistent information for a Chatter Desktop installation, e.g. last screen position, size, etc.
 


Windows Vista and Windows 7:
C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\sfdc-desktop*

*Folder looks like the example below:

C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\Roaming\sfdc-desktop.0E7F0072024938CDBA99B20C38B5F315254C2A5B.1

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\sfdc-desktop*

5- Next, you need to set the Internet Explorer settings according to the document attached to this Article. You still need to complete this step even if your default browser is not IE (Internet Explorer).

If you have Windows Vista or 7, most probably you have IE 8 by default but you can find out the version of IE you have installed on your computer from Internet Explorer |Help. You need to click on the help icon  next to Tools on the menu bar and click on “About Internet Explorer” and apply the settings using the attached document

If you have IE 7, the settings are pretty much the same but the order might be different

 

6- Then login to Salesforce and download the Chatter Desktop. This will initiate the Adobe Air installation first and then install Chatter Desktop on your computer

7- Once installation is finished, double click on the Chatter Desktop icon on your desktop and login

MAC users:

To uninstall:

-The user has to drag and drop the application into trash.

To remove all data:

-The following directory should be deleted:

 /Users/[USERNAME]/Library/Preferences/sfdc-desktop.[LONG KEY]
