Resolution By default, will prevent duplicates. You can update your preferences to allow duplicates for specific objects if needed under Prospector Preferences. recognizes a duplicate based on the Key, which is populated when a record is previously imported, or cleaned by 

The Key field must be visible to the user importing in order for to pick it up. 

Administrators on Contact Manager, Group, or Professional Edition will also need to make sure that the Key field exists on their page layout to prevent duplicates.
  1. Go to Setup
  2. Customize
  3. Leads
  4. Click on Page layouts
  5. Find the Key in the Field list box and drag it onto the page layout
  6. Save
  7. Repeat for Contacts or Accounts
