Source Filter functionality in the Analysis Dashboard

Knowledge Article Number 000171231
Description
Source Filters allow you to specify social sites that you want included or excluded in your Topic Profile results. There are a variety of ways to use Source Filters to make sure you get the content you need in your Topic Profile.

Resolution

Source Filters are not automatically applied to a Topic Profile upon creation. Once the filter has been saved, you can apply it to a Topic Profile in the Topic Profile "Details" tab.

Apply Source Filters to Topic Profiles in the Analysis Dashboard

1. In the Radian6 Analysis Dashboard, go to Configuration | Topic Profiles.
2. Under "Topic Profile(s)," select the name of your Topic Profile.
3. In "Topic Profile Details," click Filter by Source to apply the Source Filter.
4. Select the Source Filter from the list on the left.

Press CTRL to select multiple filters.

5. Click the plus sign (+) to move the Source Filter to one of the three boxes on the right.

Types of Source Filters

There are three types of filters that allow you to either include or exclude sources from your Topic Profile results, outlined in this chart.

Include all content from these sources

This will ensure ALL content from these sources (provided the social content is available to Radian6)  will be pulled in regardless of whether they match the keywords outlined in the Topic Profile. Your Topic Profile will still pull in keyword-matched content from all other sources not included in this  "Include all Content" source filter.

Include keyword-matched content from these sources

This will pull in keyword-matched content from ONLY the sources specified in the Source Filter. It will exclude all results that are not listed in the source filter.

Exclude content from these sources

This will exclude all content from the sources specified in the applied Source Filter(s). Keyword-matched content is still pulled in from all other sources.

Source Filter Functionality Chart

Not all combinations of Source Filters are compatible. For example, if there are filters applied to the "Include Keyword-Matched Content" box, it automatically excludes all other content. This is because the "Include Keyword-Matched Content" box allows for keyword matched content to be pulled in from ONLY the sites listed in the Source Filters.

The following table describes what you can expect to be returned in your Topic Profile results based on your chosen configuration:

No keywords

With keywords

No Source Filters
Applied
No content returned
Returns all available keyword matched content
Only Include All
Source Filter Applied
Returns all content for the sources specified in the Include All Filter
Returns all content for the sources specified in the Include All Filter in addition to all other keyword matched posts from other covered sources
Include All Content and Exclude Source Filters Applied
Returns all content for the sources specified in the Include all Filter
Returns all content for the sources specified in the Include All Filter and all available content matching the keywords with the exception of content from the Sources specified in the Exclude Content Filter
Include All and Include Keyword Matched
Returns all content for the sources specified in the Include All filter
Returns keyword matched content from ONLY the sources listed in the Include Keyword Matched Filter. It will not include the sources in the Include All Filter.
Include All, Include Keyword Matched, and Exclude Source filters applied
Returns all content for the sources specified in the Include All filter
Applying sources to all filters will not function as intended because the search parameters are redundant.
Include Keyword Matched filter applied
No content returned
Returns only keyword matched content from the sources specified in the applied source filter
Include Keyword Matched and Exclude Source Filter applied
No content returned
Ignores sources added in the Include Keyword Matched source filter and returns keyword matched content from all covered sources. Excludes all content from sources specified in the Exclude source filter.
Exclude Source Filter applied
No content returned
Returns all available keyword matched content but excludes all content from the sources specified in the Exclude source filter.

Overlap exception rule

In the case where there’s overlap of Include All Content, Include Keyword-Matched Content, and Exclude Content sources, the Include All Content sources will override Include Keyword-Matched Content and Exclude Content. Include Keyword-Matched Content Sources will override Exclude Content sources.
