"Cannot find default record type of the appropriate type" when using the Lead Import Wizard

When attempting to import Leads some users may encounter an error "Cannot find default record type of the appropriate type".  This can be caused by a there being no default set for an assigned record type on your user profile and can happen occasionally after installing an Appexchange app where you grant permission using included settings.
Go to your user profile and in the Record type assignment settings for each object make sure one of the assigned record types for each object has a default set.  This is easier to do if you disable the new profile interface under Setup || Customize || User Interface as all of the record type assignments and their defaults will be displayed on one screen rather than having to navigate to the individual objects in the new interface.
