DefaultValue contains character not allowed error message

Knowledge Article Number 000193726
Description We'll outline what you need to do if you're getting the error message, "The value of the "DefaultValue" parameter contains a character that is not allowed or the value exceeds the maximum allowed length," when specifying a default value on a custom field or when a custom field has been deleted and you're attempting to create a new one.
Resolution
  • The Default Value box is a formula field and has a more restrictive limit than some of the field types a default value can be specified on. When you receive this error unexpectedly, it is because the character limit and byte limit of 3,900 and 4,000 respectively have both been exceeded. To resolve this you need to shorten the length of the default value that you are trying to enter.
  • When you receive the error due to having deleted a custom field and attempting to create a new one after reaching the maximum limit you have two options.  One is to wait until the recycle bin empties out the background information for the custom field and resets the number of used fields for your organization or you can open a support case with Salesforce Support to request the recycle bin be emptied before its normal reset period.

More information on the limits of formula fields can be found here.
