Salesforce for Outlook displays the error "unable to download token from"

Description When using Salesforce for Outlook or the Side Panel, the plug-in will sometimes display the message "unable to download token from". This error message may also appear when installing or upgrading the plug-in.

The error message is usually caused by a security settings in IE. These settings determine what Salesforce for Outlook can and cannot do, regardless of what browser you use in your day-to-day work. 
Here are a few steps to try to resolve it: 
  1. Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools | Internet Options 
  2. In the "General" tab, click on the "Delete" button under "the Browsing History" section
  3. Select "Temporary Files", "Cookies", and "History", then click "Delete" 
If the above doesn't work, try the following: 
  1. Go back into Internet Options 
  2. Click on the “Advanced” tab 
  3. Scroll to find the "Security" section 
  4. Under this section, make sure the "Check for server certificate revocation" checkbox is unchecked 
If the error message persists, try this:  
  1. Go back into Internet Options 
  2. Click on the "Security" tab, then select the "Trusted Sites" option 
  3. Click on the “Sites” button and add * to the list of websites 
You may need to restart Internet Explorer after each set of steps and test to see if the error message went away

Finally, if you are running .NET 4.0 or older, you can try upgrading it to a newer version, either 4.5.1 or 4.5.2. You may require assistance from your IT in order to perform this upgrade.
