Chatter for SharePoint - Configure diagnostic logging

The default log location for SharePoint 2010 is:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\Logs

Configure diagnostic logging:

  1. Verify that the user account that is performing this procedure is a member of the Farm Administrators SharePoint group.

  2. In Central Administration, on the Home page, click “Monitoring”.

  3. On the Monitoring page, in the “Reporting” section, click “Configure diagnostic logging”.

Turn up verbose on “Chatter for SharePoint” solution ( category):
  1. Select the check box next to the category “”.

  2. Select the “verbose” trace log level from the “Least critical event to report to the trace log” list

You can check the current trace level, here “unexpected” (default level for Chatter for SharePoint trace).

Revert to the initial trace level in two ways:
  • Select “Reset to default” in the” Least critical event to report to the trace log“ list

  • select explicitly the trace level “unexpected”:in the” Least critical event to report to the trace log“ list

After you have made the changes that you want on the Diagnostic Logging page, click OK.


In order to see the “Chatter for Sharepoint” run in “verbose” tracing mode you need to recycle the application pool of the web application where it  is deployed (see IIS section below)




Open IIS manager: (

  1. Press Windows Logo + R

  2. Type: inetmgr

Retrieve application pool name:


Select the web application (site in IIS terminology) where the “Chatter for Sharepoint” solution is deployed: (here “SharePoint - FBA 44444”)

Click on “Basic Settings” (right-hand actions panel):

Note the application pool name (here “SharePoint - FBA 44444”):

Click “Cancel” -> click  on left hand connections panel “Applications Pools”:

Select the correct application pool ( here “SharePoint - FBA 44444”)


Explicit recycling of the application pool:


Right click on the selected application pool (here SharePoint - FBA 44444) -> Click on “Recycle…”

Check default IIS application pool  recycling configuration:


Click on right hand action “Advance settings”:

here we can see that the application pool is recycled on a daily basis at 1:09 PM.

If the trace level for the “Chatter for Sharepoint “ is changed then it will be effective starting from this point of time without any explicit recycling.
