How values on Picklist fields are defined on Lead conversion

Knowledge Article Number 000212489
Description Picklist values behaves differently on Lead Conversion depending on different criteria. This article provides different scenario and how Record Types and Field Mapping affects the final value on the record.
Resolution

Here are some scenarios where the final value on the resulting record changes depending on the Lead Field mapping, Record Type and default value.

LeadTest - a Picklist field in Leads
OpportunityTest - a Picklist field in Opportunity

Scenario 1

1. You have a picklist field created on Lead (LeadTest) with a corresponding field on the Opportunity (OpportunityTest).
2. You haven't setup Lead field Mapping

Result:
a. The value on the (LeadTest) field will NOT be carried over
b. The value on the (OpportunityTest) field will be based on the default value set on the record type.

Scenario 2

1. You have a picklist field created on Lead (LeadTest) with a corresponding field on the Opportunity (OpportunityTest).
2. You haven't setup Lead field Mapping
3. You are not using Record Type on Opportunity

Result:
a. The value on the (LeadTest) field will NOT be carried over and the picklist field will not have a value.

Scenario 3

1. You have a picklist field created on Lead (LeadTest) with a corresponding field on the Opportunity (OpportunityTest).
2. You have setup Lead field Mapping
3. You are not using Record Types on Opportunity

Result:
a. The value on the (LeadTest) field will be carried over

Note that:

  • Default Value set on Fields will be followed during creation of record only as it will auto-populate
  • Default Value set on Record Type will be followed if Lead field mapping is not setup during conversion
  • If Lead field mapping is setup, regardless of what is set as default under Fields or Record Type, it will always follow what you have entered on Leads upon conversion.
