Step 1 error of a Triggered Automation in Automation Studio

Knowledge Article Number 000213001
Description

There are two types of Triggered Automations and the cause of the error in step 1 below can differ based on the type of Triggered Automation. To resolve the error, you need to identify which type of Automation you're using:

No FileName Pattern: Selecting the "No Filename Pattern" option locks the trigger folder to a single Automation.  All of the files in the folder are used specifically for this Automation.
Use Filename Pattern: Selecting the "Use Filename Pattern" option allows the trigger folder to be used for multiple Automations.

To confirm which type of Automation you're using, go to Automation Studio | [Automation Name] | Workflow.  You'll see a section to the right of the Activities window labeled "Trigger."  If you see a section at the bottom labeled "Filename Pattern Settings," then the trigger is using a Filename Pattern.  If not, then the trigger isn't using a Filename Pattern.
Resolution

No FileName Pattern

This error occurs in the No FileName Pattern when the filename is incorrect in the file Transfer Activity or Import Activity. Also, this can occur when the file location is incorrect in the Automation Trigger, File Transfer Activity, or Import Activity.  Complete the three following steps to resolve the issue.

Step 1: Confirm the file Location Trigger settings in the Automation

1. In Automation Studio, go to [Automation Name] | Workflow.
2. You'll see a section just to the right of the Activities window labeled "Trigger." Underneath Edit Trigger, you'll see a small section stating:

Once activated, this Automation will run when a file is dropped into the directory: 'import/[DIRECTORY NAME HERE]'.

Good to know: The file you're using to trigger the Automation is in this directory on your Enhanced FTP account. Take note of the exact file name.  Instructions for accessing your Enhanced FTP account are in the Enhanced FTP GuideIf you don't know your account's username and password, contact your company's Account Administrator. Salesforce Marketing Cloud Support can only work with an approved account administrator regarding Enhanced FTP access.

Step 2: Confirm the File Transfer Activity and the Import Activity used in the Automation

1. In Automation Studio, go to [Automation Name] | Workflow.
2. In Step 1, take note of the Activity noted under Transfer File.
3. In Step 2, take note of the Activity listed under Import Name.

Step 3: Confirm the file location and filename specified in File Transfer Activity and the Import Activity

1. In Email, click Interactions | File Transfer.
2. The list is sorted alphabetically (Find the Activity noted under "File Transfer" in Step 2).
3. Click on the Activity name to open it.
4. Under the section labeled Source, confirm that the file location listed in the drop down under File Location matches that of the Automation Trigger. This must match exactly.
5. If the file locations match, confirm that the file naming pattern listed under Source | File Naming Pattern is correct.

Note: It's possible there are substitution strings used here.  Review "Automation Studio Substitution Strings" for more information.

6. If the file naming patterns match, go to Interactions | Import in Email.
7. The list is sorted alphabetically (Find the Activity noted under "Import File" in Step 3).
8. Click on the Activity name to open it.
9. Under the section labeled Source, confirm that the file location listed in the drop down under File Location is Enhanced FTP.

Tip: The File Transfer Activity will place the file in the Enhanced FTP file location (import directory) once the file has been transferred.  The location in the Import Activity should not match the location specified in the Automation Trigger.

10. If the file location is correct, confirm that the file naming pattern listed under Source | File Naming Pattern is correct.

Use Filename Pattern

An additional reason why this error is occurs in the Use Filename Pattern include that the filename is incorrect in the Automation Trigger.  To resolve this error, confirm the filename in the Automation Trigger.

1. In Automation Studio, click  [Automation Name] | Workflow.
2. Click Edit Trigger
3. The string listed in the text field under Use Filename Pattern should match that of the file placed in the correct directory on the Enhanced FTP.
