Remove Subscribers from a List that was Imported by accident

Description
Subscribers can be removed from a list if they are accidentally imported. In order to delete the subscribers, you'll need to:
 
1. Create an Attribute in the account. 
2. Flag the subscribers that are to be deleted in the original import file.
3. Flag the subscribers to be deleted in the list that was imported to.
4. Segment the subscribers who do belong on the list.
5. Delete the new list.

 
Review the following detailed instructions to complete steps 1-5 above. 
Resolution


Create an attribute in the account called DeleteFlag 

 
1. Go to Email | Subscribers | Profile Management.
2. Click Create.
3. In the General tab, name the attribute DeleteFlag.
Do not select any of the checkboxes.
4. In the Data tab, make sure that the Data Type is selected as Text.
Do not make any additional changes.
5. In the Values tab, do not make any changes.
 


Flag the subscribers to be deleted in the original import file


In the file that was accidentally imported, make the following changes:

 
1. Add a new column to the file, and name it DeleteFlag.
2. For any subscribers that should not have been imported, enter a value of 1 for the column DeleteFlag.
3. Save the file under the new name Delete_Subscribers.csv to your computer's desktop.



Flag the subscribers to be deleted in the list that was imported to

 
1. Go to Email | Subscribers | Lists.
2. Check the box next to the list that was accidentally imported into, and click Import.
3. In the Import Subscriber Wizard:
4. On the overview screen, click Next.
5. On the Opt-in Certification screen, check 'I agree', and click Next.
6. On the Identify Source File screen:
​7. Under Upload Source, select from your desktop the file named Delete_Subscribers.csv.
8. Under Data Format, make sure CSV is checked.
9. Under Update Options, select Update existing subscribers but do not add subscribers that do not exist.
10. Click Next.
11. On the Map Attributes screen, map the columns on the left to the corresponding columns on the right, then click Next.
12. On the Confirm Mappings screen:
13. Optional: Check the Email me upon import completion box, and enter your email address.
14. Click Begin.



Segment the subscribers who do belong on the list

 
1. Go to Email | Subscribers | Lists.
2. Click Create.
3. Name the list Delete from List.
4. Click Next.
5. Click Next.
6. Click Save.
7. Go to the List that was accidentally imported into, and click on the list name.
8. Click Move/Copy.
9. In the Move/Copy Subscribers wizard:

 
 
a. Select the list Delete from List.
b. Check the box Maintain subscriber status from originating list when you move/copy the subscriber to the destination list.
c. Click Move All.


 
10. Go to Email | Subscribers | Groups.
11. Click Create.
12. In the Create Subscriber Group wizard:


 
a. On the overview screen, click Next.
b. On the Target Group screen, leave the option selected for Build a rule based on profiles and preferences, then click Next.
c. On the Build Rule screen:


 
13. Under Look for: make sure Subscribers is selected.
14. Under In: browse to the list named Delete from List.
15. Under Find subscribers that match these criteria, Select Field | Profile Attributes | DeleteFlag
16. Select the operator "is not equal to."
17Enter 1 in "the word(s)" field.
 
d. On the Identify Group screen, enter the Group Name as Move Subscribers, then click Create.
e. Once the group has been created, you will be presented with a Complete screen.  Check the box to view the group, then click Finish.


 
18. In the group, click Copy.
19. In the Copy Subscribers wizard:

 
 
a. Select the original list.
b. Check the box Maintain subscriber status from originating list when you move/copy the subscriber to the destination list.
c. Click Copy All.


This will put all the subscribers back into the original list minus the ones that were accidentally imported. 



Delete the new list

 
1. Go to Email | Subscribers | Lists.
2. Check the box next to Delete from List.
3. Click Delete.
4. You will be presented with a warning screen:

 
  • Do not check the box Delete all subscribers in Delete from List from the application.
  • Click OK.


The subscribers who should not have been imported have now been removed from the list.
