Salesforce for Outlook - SFO 2.8 and above installer changes

Knowledge Article Number 000214833
Description

With the Summer '15 release, there are several changes to installation that you'll want to be aware of.

Resolution Unlike previous versions of Salesforce for Outlook (SFO) the 2.8 version can be installed on a Per-User (Me Only) or a Per-Machine (Everyone) basis

  • Per-User” - Known as "Me Only" installation is performed for the single user that is executing the SFO Setup – it is not available for use by any other user of the computer.
  • Per-Machine” - Known as "Everyone who logs in to this computer", installation is performed to allow all registered users of the computer to access and use the application.

SFO installers in different versions

With SFO version 2.4.x and older, users and local administrators could only install the application Per-Machine. The installer would place the application executable files and all the necessary DLLs for the application to run in the C:\Program Files folder. On 64bit Windows machines, there are 2 Program Files folders.

Installation folder - Version 2.4.x and older

  • Program Files (x86) - This is used for 32bit applications. If you have 32bit version Office or Outlook installation (indicated by x86) the SFO will place the files in this location.
  • Program Files - The installer will copy the files here only if you have 64bit version of Office or Outlook
    - Location of the Sync.db file : %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ DB
    - Location of the SFO log files: %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\

For the SFO version between 2.5 ~ 2.7.x, the installer has changed and installs SFO Per-User (Me Only). The installer no longer uses the Program Files folder and instead places the application executable files and all the necessary DLLs for the application in the end user profile in the AppData\Roaming\Salesforce.com folder.

Installation folder - Version 2.5 ~ 2.7.x

- %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\

- Location of the Sync.db file : %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ DB
- Location of the SFO log files: %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ Logs

Now if you have SFO installed and would like to upgrade to the latest SFO, you need to consider the following

Note*
we recommend uninstalling the SFO that you have installed on your computer first before upgrading.

Upgrading from SFO 2.4.x and olderYou can run the SFO 2.8.x with the default option which is "Everyone who logs in to this computer"

You need a local administrator or someone who has local admin permissions on the computer to uninstall the old version or install the new version.
You may get a prompt by Windows UAC ( User Account Control) to enter Administrator credentials or click on Allow to continue
Upgrading from SFO 2.5 ~ 2.7.xSince these versions are installed Per-User, then you can only directly upgrade to SFO 2.8.x with the "Me Only" installation option. You do not need a local administrator or local admin permission on the computer to uninstall the old version or install the new version

Installation folder for SFO 2.8.x - Installed using the Per-Machine (default installation option for first time installer)

- Program Files (x86) - This is used for 32bit applications. If you have 32bit version Office or Outlook installation (indicated by x86) the SFO will place the files in this location.
- Program Files - This installer uses this folder if you have 64bit version Office or Outlook
* The uninstaller will remove these files completely

- Location of the Sync.db file : %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ DB
- Location of the SFO log files: %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ Logs

Installation folder for SFO 2.8.x - Installed using the Per-User (Me Only) option

if you are installing SFO for the first time on your computer
- Users\<username>\Local\Programs\salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook
You can click on Start and type in   %LocalAppData%\Programs\ and you will see the salesforce.com folder. Again this is the location of the installation folder if you are installing SFO for the first time on your computer or the SFO installation folders that were created by previous SFO installers in the Appdata\roaming\ are removed.

* Notice the application may get installed in the Local AppData\Program folder or Roaming folder, but the logs and Sync database are always placed in the Roaming App Data location in every version of SFO

If you already had SFO installed and you are upgrading, or have uninstalled it but haven't removed the Appdata\roaming\salesforce.com folder, the installation places the files here:
- %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\
- Location of the Sync.db file : %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ DB
- Location of the SFO log files: %AppData%\Salesforce.com\Salesforce for Outlook\ Logs

If you or your local IT plans on installing the SFO 2.8.x for everyone (Per-Machine), either manually using the "Everyone who logs in to this computer" option or deploy it using automation for every computer, you must make sure that all your users have logged in and uninstalled their installed version of SFO. If there is a user who has SFO 2.5 ~ 2.7.x installed and IT plans on installing the SFO version 2.8.x into the program files folder (for Everyone) the installation will succeed but when the end user logs in to their machine, they will see 2 different shortcuts for SFO.

One that would point to the new 2.8.x version installed by IT and another that points to the old installation.

The SFO 2.8 will be running in the System tray at the bottom of the screen on the right hand side.  If you click on the Customize option (the small arrow pointing up at the bottom right corner on the Taskbar) you will see two different notification icons for SFO:
