Error “Could not perform operation because the default mail client is not properly configured”

Description When clicking an email address in Salesforce page, the default email client is Microsoft Outlook which normally opens as expected to compose an email. However, it may not load Microsoft Outlook and show the error message below

Root Cause

Having multiple e-mail programs installed on the same computer and sending email from any non-mail program
 

What is an Email Client


Programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, Mozilla Thunderbird and so on. There are also a few web based email client as you know such as Google Mail (Gmail), Yahoo, Hotmail and etc (Any email application that you  open in a browser such as IE or Firefox)
Resolution

Contact your Internal Help Desk (IT) or Microsoft Support

    Note for Windows Vista/7/8/8.1: 
    In case MAILTO is not available in Associate a File Type or Protocol with a program screen, you may not have any valid mail client installed, such as MS Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.
