Uncaught error in markup://force:navigateToURL : Invalid pointer

Knowledge Article Number 000231168
Description This issue is caused by a URL being too long as IE browser has a URL length limit and navigateToComponent and navigateToURL generate a URL which could be too long.

Here are the steps to replicate this issue,

1. Create a VF page "menu"
<apex:page standardController="Opportunity" >
 <script> function myNavigateToUrl(url) { if(typeof sforce != 'undefined'){ url ); }else{ window.parent.location.reload(); } } </script>
 <ul> <li><apex:outputLink onclick="myNavigateToUrl('/apex/page_one')">Page One -</apex:outputLink></li> </ul>

2. Add above page to opportunity layout.
3. Create pageone
<apex:page standardController="Opportunity"> <h1> Welcome to Page 1 ! </h1> </apex:page>
4. Use Lightning Desktop or Switch to Lightning Experience, navigate to Opportunity.
5. Select an Opportunity
6. Click the Details Tab
7. Click "Page One" link on menu.
8. Repeat steps 4 - 7, you will see the "page one" url keeps growing longer. Once its length exceeds IE limitation (around 2000), you can see the error.
Unfortunately, there was a problem. Please try again. If the problem continues, get in touch with your administrator with the error ID shown here and any other related details.Uncaught error in markup://force:navigateToURL : Invalid pointer
Resolution The error is because of a limitation on IE11 browser and the URL size keeps on increasing with every click as it gathers information for back button cache and other information.
