The only requirements for adding a new subscriber to the Salesforce Marketing Cloud is confirmation that the subscriber has opted in, a valid email address and subscriber key. A subscriber key is a text field that contains a value that uniquely identifies a subscriber in your system. Adding a subscriber to the Salesforce Marketing Cloud can happen in several ways.
  1. Manually add an individual to the All Subscribers list
  2. Import
  3. API
    1. SOAP API
    2. REST API
  4. Providing their email in your Profile or Preference Center
For the purpose of this article, we’ll cover manually adding and importing a list of subscribers. 

Manually adding a subscriber
  1. Login to the Marketing Cloud
  2. Navigate to the Email UI
  3. Go to Subscribers > All Subscribers
  4. Click Create
  5. Identify the Subscriber Key (confirm subscriber key for other subscribers, most times the subscriber key will be the subscribers email address) and populate the Subscriber Key field appropriately
  6. Populate the email address with the subscribers valid email address
  7. Populate any profile attribute fields (not required)
  8. Select the appropriate lists in which the subscriber should be added
  9. Click Finish
 
Importing a list of Subscribers to All Subscribers

Note: Before importing the file, be sure that email address and subscriber key are both present on the file you will be importing. You may also include data that fits into your Subscriber Profile Attribute fields.  You will have the opportunity to map them later, or if you title your header rows identically to the Profile Attribute Field Name, they will be matched by the system automatically.   
  1. Login to the Marketing Cloud
  2. Navigate to the Email UI
  3. Go to Subscribers Go to Subscribers > All Subscribers
  4. Click Import
  5. On the Import Subscriber Wizard, click next
  6. Certify that all of the Subscribers on the list you are importing have opted-in by checking “I agree”, click next
  7. Choose the location of the file you are importing
  8. Choose the data format (CSV, Tab Delimited, Other Delimited)
  9. Choose your update options, click next
    1. Add new subscribers and update subscribers that already exist, or
    2. Add new subscribers but do not update subscribers that already exist, or
    3. Update existing subscribers but do not add subscribers that do not exist
  10. Map Attributes accordingly, click next
  11. Confirm Mappings, record count and columns are correct
  12. Check the “Email me upon import completion” box and provide an email address in the email address box if you would like a notification of import completion
  13. Click Begin
  14. Review the list to ensure the import was successful
Creating and Importing a list of Subscribers to My Lists

Note: Before importing the file, be sure that email address and subscriber key are both present on the file you will be importing. You may also include data that fits into your Subscriber Profile Attribute fields.  You will have the opportunity to map them later, or if you title your header rows identically to the Profile Attribute Field Name, they will be matched by the system automatically.   
  1. Login to the Marketing Cloud
  2. Navigate to the Email UI
  3. Go to Subscribers Go to Subscribers > My Lists
  4. Click Create
  5. Name your list
    1. If you would like this list to be viewed by your subscribers in your profile center, check the “Public List” checkbox
  6. Enter a description of the list in the description field (not required, but recommended)
  7. Choose the file location of the list
  8. Associate to applicable campaign (not required)
  9. If you would like new subscribers who are added to the list to receive a Welcome Email when they are added to this particular list, check the Send Welcome Email checkbox and choose the appropriate email.
  10. Click Save
  11. Open the list you just created by clicking on the name of the list
  12. On the Import Subscriber Wizard, click next
  13. Certify that all of the Subscribers on the list you are importing have opted-in by checking “I agree”, click next
  14. Choose the location of the file you are importing
  15. Choose the data format (CSV, Tab Delimited, Other Delimited)
  16. Choose your update options, click next
    1. Add new subscribers and update subscribers that already exist
    2. Add new subscribers but do not update subscribers that already exist
    3. Update existing subscribers but do not add subscribers that do not exist
  17. Map Attributes accordingly, click next
