Salesforce for Outlook - Side Panel displays the error "Salesforce doesn’t support Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 for Salesforce Side Panel"

ISSUE

Side Panel displays the following error message when its loaded in Outlook.

"Salesforce.com doesn’t support Microsoft® Internet Explorer® 7 for the Salesforce Side Panel. Make sure you upgrade to a later version. Otherwise, content in the side panel won’t display correctly."

As a result users may not see the "+" icon to use the publisher actions in the Side Panel either


CAUSE

Mismatch or wrong value(s) for the The FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION feature defines the default emulation mode for Internet Explorer and supports the following values.
Resolution
Before you begin, please check your installed version of Internet Explorer (IE) and if you have IE 7, reach out to your IT Help Desk to upgrade it also you must have a local admin rights or be a local administrator to perform the following steps)

To address this issue you need to remove the Outlook.exe entries from a few locations in your Registry and then reinstall SFO
 

1- Close Outlook and SFO from the system tray and then using the Windows and R key combination on your keyboard bring up the RUN box and type in REGEDIT and press Enter

2- In Windows Registry Editor, navigate to the following key
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
     Microsoft
         Internet Explorer
             Main
                FeatureControl
                    FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

 
3- Click on the FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION
4- On the right side, locate the Outlook.exe key and click on it and then right click on it and click on Delete and click on Yes to confirm deleting the value (make sure to click on the Outlook.exe and nothing else, you do not want to delete anything else except the Outlook.exe entry)

5- Do the same thing for the following registry locations:
HKCU\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION   (If it exist)
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MAIN\FeatureControl\FEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION

6- Download and reinstall Salesforce for Outlook and try to reproduce the issue. It is best to install SFO using the Everyone option (Per Machine) to make sure IE files are updated correctly. If the Everyone option is greyed out, please follow the steps on the Knowledge Article 000232753
