Accounts will not merge - Lead has been Converted message

Description Attempting to merge two accounts but instead of merging the accounts, the final message is about a lead being converted.

This happens when you have a lookup on your accounts to the lead object and the lead in the field is listed as a converted lead on the non-surviving account record. The lead field on the surviving account is not populated and will by default be populated with the converted lead
Resolution Remove the converted lead from the non surviving account or make sure that the lead field in the account merge wizard is set to not receive a value.

Enable the "Enable "Set Audit Fields upon Record Creation" and "Update Records with Inactive Owners" User Permissions" in the user setup menu which will allow you to edit converted leads.
