Using custom formula fields with person accounts

Publish Date: Sep 24, 2026
Description

Learn which contact custom formula field types can't be referenced through a person account, and how to structure your formulas to avoid unexpected results.

Resolution

This article answers the question: why can't I reference certain contact custom formula fields from a person account, and what should I do instead? Person accounts merge Account and Contact data, but formula fields on the underlying Contact record aren't fully accessible through the person account layer — only a couple of specific formula field types are supported, and most are not.

Why This Happens

Custom formula fields from contacts generally aren't available to use within person account formulas. For example, the following custom formula field types can't be referenced through a person account:

  • An image related to a contact
  • An address from a contact
  • Other nested contact formula field references
  • Hyperlink with spanning across Contact's related object. Example: HYPERLINK(Contact_r.AccountName, "Link", "_blank")

Recommended Approach

Avoid nested contact formula field references within person account formulas. Structure formulas so they reference only person account fields directly, rather than embedding Contact object formula fields, to avoid unexpected blank or broken results.
