Why Opportunity Trends Report Shows Different Results Than the Opportunity History Report in Salesforce

Publish Date: Jun 3, 2026
Description

The Salesforce Opportunity History report and the Opportunity Trends report both track historical information about Opportunity records. However, these two report types use different data sources and have different behaviors, which can result in users seeing different information in each report for the same set of opportunities.
This article explains the key differences between these two report types to help users understand why the results differ and how to use each report appropriately.

Resolution

This article describes how each report type works and why their results differ, so administrators and end users can make informed decisions about which report type to use for specific analysis needs.

How the Opportunity History Report Works
The Opportunity History report tracks changes made to specific fields on Opportunity records where Field History Tracking is enabled. Field History Tracking is a Salesforce feature that logs a record of changes whenever a tracked field value is modified. The History report only displays records where a change occurred on those tracked fields after tracking was enabled. Fields without history tracking enabled do not appear in this report type.

How the Opportunity Trends Report Works
The Opportunity Trends report works differently from the History report in several important ways:

  1. The Opportunity Trends report tracks changes to four specific fields: Stage, Amount, Probability, and Close Date. Field History Tracking configuration does not affect whether these fields are available in the Trends report.
  2. Both historical field values and actual (current) field values are available in the Trends report builder, regardless of whether Field History Tracking is enabled on the object.
  3. The report can track trends as of a Specific Date, a Date Range, or All Time, depending on the Date Field selected for the display.
  4. When the "As of Date" option is used, the report displays the actual current values alongside the historical values as of the last day of each month within the selected Date Range.

Why the Same Record Appears Multiple Times in the Trends Report
When a Date Range spans more than one month, a single Opportunity record may appear multiple times in the Trends report. This is expected behavior. Each row represents the Trend state of that record as of the last day of a different month in the range. Each row shows the appropriate historical field values as of that specific date.

Important Distinction
The Opportunity Trends report populates records even when no edits or updates have been made to the Opportunity. In contrast, the Opportunity History report only shows records where a tracked field was actually changed. This makes the Opportunity Trends report fundamentally different from the History Tracking report, as it is not dependent on Field History Tracking at all.
