Unable to Edit Records via Inline Editing in a Salesforce List View

Julkaisupäivä: Apr 2, 2026
Kuvaus

Inline editing in list views allows users to quickly update records without opening them individually. If this functionality is unavailable, it is usually due to configuration, permissions, or filter-related constraints.

This article outlines the most common causes and how to resolve them.

Ratkaisu

Inline editing depends on a combination of user permissions, list view configuration, object settings, and field-level constraints. If any requirement is not met, inline editing may be disabled.

1. User Permissions and Access

Ensure the following:

  • Inline Editing and Enhanced Lists are enabled in user settings
  • Mass Edits from Lists permission is enabled (required for editing multiple records)
  • The user has Edit access to the records via sharing rules
  • The user has Field-Level Security (FLS) access to edit fields in the list view
  • Accessibility Mode is not enabled

Note: Inline editing respects page layout settings such as read-only or hidden fields.

2. Record Type Considerations

  • List views must be filtered to one record type only
    • Example: Record Type EQUALS Business Account
  • Inline editing does not work if:
    • Multiple record types are included
    • All record types are inactive

To resolve inactive record type issues:

  • Delete unused inactive record types, or
  • Ensure at least one active record type exists

Then apply filter:

  • Record Type EQUALS <blank> (if applicable)

Additional Notes:

  • Record Type cannot be edited inline
  • Filters must use AND logic only (no OR conditions)
  • In Salesforce Classic, inline editing fails if there are 6+ filters

3. Settings and Feature-Specific Considerations

  • Person Accounts
    • Add filter:
      • Person Account EQUALS True (Person Accounts)
      • Person Account EQUALS False (Business Accounts)
    • Not editable from Contact list views
  • Contacts
    • Add filter:
      • Contacts EQUALS True or False

4. Field and Layout Constraints

Inline editing is not supported when:

  • The field is not present on the assigned page layout
  • The field is used in lookup filter criteria
  • The field type is:
    • Long Text Area
    • Rich Text Area
  • Fields such as:
    • Owner
    • Alias
      cannot be inline edited

5. Additional Limitations and Troubleshooting

  • Remove filter logic (not supported with inline editing)
  • Products can only be edited one record at a time
  • For Tasks and Events, filter the list view:
    • Task EQUALS True (Tasks)
    • Task EQUALS False (Events)
  • If using dependent picklists:
    • Controlling field can be edited if accessible
  • Full Name fields (Contacts, Leads, etc.) are not editable:
    • Edit First Name and Last Name instead
