Convert XLS File to CSV Format for Salesforce Data Import

Before importing data into Salesforce using Data Loader, the Data Import Wizard, or another API-based tool, the import file must be in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format. Microsoft Excel files (XLS or XLSX) are not directly supported by Salesforce import tools. The steps below explain how to convert an Excel file to CSV format using Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Notepad (Windows), or TextEdit (Mac).

    Convert XLS to CSV Using Microsoft Excel

    1. Open the Import file. This can be done through a spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, but can also be done in TextEdit (Mac) or Notepad (Windows)
    2. Select File. 
    3. Click Save As.
    4. Rename the file if you prefer then select .csv (Comma delimited.)
    5. Click Save.
     

    Convert XLS to CSV Using Google Sheets

               1. Open Google Sheets and upload the XLS file.
               2. Select File > Download > Comma Separated Values (.csv).
     

    Convert XLS to CSV Using a Text Editor

    Copy the data from Excel, paste into Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac), and save the file with a .csv extension, selecting 'All Files' as the file type in Notepad." 
     

    Notes:

    • You also can copy data from the Excel file and save it in Notepad. 
    • Make sure to save them as xxxxx.csv file and select All Files type in Notepad.
    • You can also convert your spreadsheet into CSV format
