Error: "Report cannot be deleted" for report linked to dashboard component

Description

When attempting to delete a Salesforce Report, users may see an error stating the report cannot be deleted because one or more dashboards reference it. This occurs in both Classic and Lightning Experience.

CLASSIC:

Report cannot be deleted
One or more dashboards depend on this report. Please delete the dashboard components referring to this report and try again.


LIGHTNING:

We couldn't complete your request. Ask your Salesforce admin for help.
Error Details
The report can't be deleted because there are one or more dashboards referencing it.

Résolution

A Salesforce Report cannot be deleted if it is currently used as a component source in a Dashboard. You must first identify and delete the Dashboard Component that references the report before the report itself can be deleted.

To find the Dashboard Component associated to the Report, follow these steps:
 

(A)  Create a custom report type


1. Go to Setup | Create | Report Types | New custom report types
2. Set the primary object to Reports and the secondary object to Dashboard components
3. Set the Dashboard components to "A" records may or may not have related "B" Records
4. Run the report using that report type and include the following fields:
  • Report Name
  • Dashboard Title
  • Dashboard Component ID
  • Dashboard Components: Created By: Full Name


Note: You may add a filter Report Name equal to "Name of Report" to limit the results.

 

(B)  Delete the Dashboard Component


1. Copy the Dashboard Component ID and paste it on your browser URL bar, right after your instance name. For example:
 
  • Dashboard Component ID: 000XXXXXXXXXXXX
  • Browser URL: https://na5.salesforce.com/ 000XXXXXXXXXX
2. If you can open the Dashboard Component, simply delete it.
3. If you can't open the Dashboard Component due to a "Data Not Available" error message, this means that the Dashboard Component is saved in someone else's Personal Dashboard Folder.
4. Have the user who owns the personal folder where the dashboard is stored delete the Dashboard Component ID, as explained in Step 1.
