Cross-object Merge Fields Do Not Work in Email Templates

  • The Email Template function cannot process multiple objects.
  • From a custom object, you can pull in all fields that have a Parent-Child relationship with fields on that object. Other fields will not be included.
  • Related lists on an object will not be included in an email template. See Email template does not merge the fields from a related list.

This article applies to both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience Users.

If Cross Formulas in the email template are not working, enabling the Object setting "Allow Activities" may resolve the issue.

Use Cross Object Formulas as workaround for Email Template processing limitations

 

  • With the cross object formulas, you can create a field on the object that references the associated object.
  • The email template can then reference that field on the primary object instead of an entirely different object.
