Salesforce provides programmatic access to your organization's data through several API types, including SOAP API, REST API, and Bulk API. Apex custom web services also support SOAP and REST endpoints via the Lightning Platform. Platform Events and the Streaming API are also available in all API-enabled editions.
Not all Salesforce editions include API access. The edition your organization uses determines whether API access is available by default, can be purchased as an add-on, or is not available at all.
The following Salesforce editions include API access by default:
The following editions do not include API access by default:
For Professional Edition organizations, API access must be purchased as an add-on and can be enabled by contacting your Account Executive. If you do not have a designated Account Executive, contact the Salesforce Sales Team.
Note: The Additional API Calls product does not enable API access for Professional Edition. To enable API access in Professional Edition, you must order the Web Services API product. The Additional API Calls product is used to increase the number of permitted API calls for Professional Edition instances that already have API access enabled.
For API-related limits, refer to the Salesforce Developer Limits and Allocations Quick Reference.
If you need API access temporarily for a Data Migration in a Professional Edition organization, contact your Account Executive to request that API access be provisioned as a courtesy. These requests are for Data Migrations only, and the time frame is determined between you and your Account Executive.
Some AppExchange applications are available for Group or Professional Editions even when the listing states API is required. These applications use authenticated API tokens provided by the app developer. Contact the developer of the application to determine whether this authentication is provided.
Certified partner applications (such as the PE version of the Excel Connector) are granted an API token after completing a security review. This token (sometimes called a Client ID) allows API requests from that application to operate with Professional Edition organizations.
