Default and Maximum Role Limits

Salesforce Support can increase the number of roles allowed in your org.

  • By default, a Salesforce org can have up to 500 Roles.
  • The current maximum is 10,000 Roles.
  • Requests for a higher limit require a documented business case, including the specific number of roles required.
Løsning

This article explains how to request an increase to your org's maximum number of Roles, and shares best practices for managing your Role Hierarchy.

How to Request a Role Limit Increase

To request a role limit increase, please create a support case with the Feature Activation & Limits Team.

Note: In Salesforce orgs created in Spring '21 or later, you can create up to 5,000 roles by default. In existing orgs, the default limit hasn't changed.

Considerations and Best Practices

  • Organizations should not have a role for every user.
  • The Role Hierarchy is not meant to mirror your company's org chart.
  • It's best to set up roles based on data access needs and eliminate any roles that aren't needed.
  • Having too many roles, especially deeply nested ones, may cause performance issues.

Optimizing Roles for Community/Partner Users

If your organization has Community Users, you can save roles by turning on the Account Role Optimization feature — especially if most of your Community Users share a single role. Admins can review this documentation for more info: Optimize Account Roles to Improve Performance and Scale Your Org.
