Create a Route in Salesforce Maps

This article explains how to create a route in Salesforce Maps, including a full overview of the available route options and two ways to build a route — from Markers or from imported calendar Events.

Route Options Overview

With Salesforce Maps Route features, users can easily plan their day to visit Salesforce records and Points of Interest, making your day more efficient and organized. Below is a list of all options available from the Salesforce Maps Routes interface.

• X Icon: Closes this route, returns to the previous panel.
• Route Name: This is an input box that you can use to edit the name of the route.
• Save: Saves this route. There is also the Save As option, which can be used to save the route to a different day.
• Three Horizontal Dots: The three horizontal dots reveal several options for Deleting the current Route, Removing all Waypoints, and Importing Events from your Salesforce calendar.
• Clock Icon: Opens time-based routing options. You can use these options to configure the exact start and end times for your route, as well as custom stop durations for each of your stops.
• Vehicle Icon: Changes the driving mode (for example, you can set the Driving Mode to Walking, Bicycling, etc).
• Optimize: Optimizes the route.
• Lock Stop Order: Locks the destination order.
• On the Map: Hide or show this route on the map.
• Add Starting Location: Adds the starting location to this route. These locations can be selected from your Maps favorite locations.
• Add Ending Location: Adds the ending location to this route. These locations can be selected from your Maps favorite locations.
• Add a Stop: You can also add a stop (maybe you want to stop for lunch).
• Print / Mail Icon: Both of these buttons open a printer-friendly version of the route that can either be printed or emailed.

Creating a Route With Markers

Using Maps Mass Actions, you can draw a boundary around a group of Markers, right click them, and add them to a route. Alternatively, you can select any Marker, select the Actions tab, and select Add to Route. Below are the steps:

1. Start by plotting a Marker Layer.
2. Draw a boundary around the group of markers you want to route. You can use a Polygon, Circle, or Square. Right click the boundary, select Mass Actions, and select Add to Route. Note that you can just as easily click a marker individually, select the Actions tab, and select Add to Route. This is helpful if you need to build out a route one marker at a time.
3. Users can choose to add individual Notes to the waypoints. Click the pencil icon on a waypoint to add notes. After a note is written, click the checkmark icon and save the route.
4. When the routes are added to the Routes panel, you have a few options. Start by setting the Transportation Mode. This tells Salesforce Maps whether you're routing via car, bicycle, or some other mode. At that point, Maps should generate a route straightaway.
5. You now have a few options depending on your use case. If you don't care about the visit order, select Optimize — Maps will determine the most optimal order of your waypoints. However, if you have a set schedule you need to follow, select Lock Stop Order (you'll most likely use this method if you added markers one by one). This ensures your points remain in a given order.
6. (Optional) You can also add a starting and ending location to your route. These locations are pulled from your Favorite Locations.
7. Lastly, save your route via the save button. Note that your routes are saved to specific dates.

Creating a Route Via Imported Events

You can also import Events that can be used to create a route.

1. Start by selecting the Routes tab in Maps, then select New.
2. Select the three horizontal dots, then select Import Events.
3. Use the calendar to select a date.
4. Maps will import the Events from that day into your calendar. You can then continue to add waypoints to your route with Markers or waypoints.
5. Lastly, save your route via the save button. Note that your routes are saved to specific dates. Maps will automatically look to the Event's related object for routing purposes. For example, if you have Events related to the Account object, Maps will automatically look to the Account object's address. If there is no related address on the Account, you will need to manually edit the routing waypoint in order for Maps to route.

Note: This feature imports the events of the logged-in user. If the route is for another user, please access Maps as them to import their calendar events. See Maps Application Settings for more information.
