Looking for reasons to migrate to Lightning? Here is one more: themes and palettes for dashboards.

Salesforce has upped the ante when it comes to data visualization. Now, you can customize the color of your dashboards with 14 color palettes to choose from. You can also highlight your data with the light theme or dark theme to curate it effectively.

Although this feature is generally available, system administrators still need to create a permission set to enable the permission 'Change Dashboard Colors' and assign it to the required users. 

Note: Dashboards only gives the option to change color palette if a report is grouped by picklist fields.

Create a permission set for the permission 'Change Dashboard Colors' in Lightning Experience

1. Go to:

  • Salesforce Classic: Setup
  • Lightning Experience: Gear icon | Setup

2. In the Quick Find box, enter Permission Set.
3. Click New.
4. Enter the label of your choice.
5. Enter a description.
6. Choose a permission set license. To learn more about permission set licenses, please review 
What Are Permission Set Licenses?  and Create Permission Sets
7. Click Save. 
8. Under System Permissions, click Edit.
9. Select Change Dashboard Colors.

Note: You will need to manually assign the permission set no matter the choice of permission set license. 

To manually assign the permission set 


1. Go to:

  • Salesforce Classic: Setup
  • Lightning Experience: Gear icon | Setup
2. In the Quick Find box, enter Permission Set.
3. Click the permission set of your choice.
4. Click Manage Assignments.
5. Click Add Assignments.
6. Select the user of your choice.
7. Click Assign.
8. Click Done.
