Error 'This add-in could not be started' on Salesforce Outlook Integration

When you install the Salesforce Outlook Integration and open Microsoft Outlook, a yellow banner may appear in place of the Salesforce side panel displaying the following error:
ADD-IN ERROR: 'This add-in could not be started. Close this dialog to ignore the problem or click "Restart" to try again.'
This error typically occurs when Protected Mode settings in Internet Explorer or Windows Internet Properties conflict with the security requirements of the Salesforce Outlook Integration add-in. The error also appears when you try to use the Salesforce 'View' button to associate an email to a Salesforce record. Clicking the 'Restart' button does not resolve the issue.

To resolve the 'This add-in could not be started' error in the Salesforce Outlook Integration, you need to enable Protected Mode in Internet Properties and ensure your domain is added to the Trusted Sites zone. This allows the Salesforce Outlook Integration side panel to load correctly within Outlook.

Enable Protected Mode via Internet Explorer

  1. Close Outlook and all open browser windows.
  2. Open Internet Explorer.
  3. Click Tools.
  4. Click Internet Options.

Alternative: Access Internet Properties via the Run Dialog

Instead of steps 2–4 above, you can also:
a. Press the Windows logo key + R on your keyboard. b. Enter inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.

Configure Protected Mode Settings

  1. Click the Security tab.
  2. Select the Internet Sites zone.
  3. Select Enable Protected Mode (make sure the checkbox is checked).
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart Internet Explorer and Outlook.
  6. Try to reproduce the issue.
Note: If you use a custom domain or single sign-on (SSO), you may also need to enable this option under the Trusted Sites zone after adding your SSO URLs, or under the Intranet site zone.
