Cannot View PDF Files from SharePoint via Salesforce Files Connect — By Design Limitation

When users attach a PDF file found in SharePoint into a Salesforce Chatter post or Files section and then try to view it, Salesforce opens a new browser tab that displays only the file name — not the actual PDF content.
Salesforce Files Connect is a feature that integrates Salesforce with external storage providers such as Microsoft SharePoint, allowing users to access and share files stored outside of Salesforce. However, Files Connect only supports files that can be opened through Microsoft Office Online applications (such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents).
Because PDF files are not part of the Microsoft Office (MS Office) 365 online application package and cannot be created or opened by Office Online apps, they cannot be previewed directly within Salesforce through Files Connect. This is a known limitation of the Files Connect — SharePoint integration.

Why PDF Files Cannot Be Previewed in Salesforce via Files Connect

This behavior is working as designed. PDF files are not part of the Microsoft Office 365 (MS Office 365) online app package. Salesforce Files Connect — the integration that connects Salesforce with external storage like SharePoint — supports only files that can be opened via Office Online (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Since PDFs are not native to the Office 365 application suite, Salesforce redirects users to SharePoint to open them.

Workaround: Open the PDF Directly in SharePoint

To view the PDF file, follow these steps:

  1. When you are redirected to the browser tab showing only the file name, look at the URL in the address bar — it contains the SharePoint directory path where the PDF is stored.
  2. Navigate back to that SharePoint directory by editing the URL path or using the SharePoint breadcrumb navigation.
  3. Locate the PDF file in the SharePoint directory and open it directly within SharePoint to view the full content.
