Mass Update UserRole DeveloperName (API Names) with Salesforce Data Loader

Salesforce Data Loader can be used to mass update the DeveloperName (API Name) field on UserRole records. This is useful when you need to rename multiple roles in bulk without making individual UI changes in Setup. The process involves three steps: exporting current UserRole data, preparing a CSV file with new API names, and importing the update using Data Loader's Update command.

Step 1: Export Current UserRole Data

  1. Log in to Salesforce Data Loader.
  2. Select the Export command.
  3. Check "Show all Salesforce Objects" to locate the UserRole object.
  4. Select the Role (UserRole) object and choose a target location for the exported file.
  5. Select all necessary fields (at minimum: Id, DeveloperName, Name) and click Finish.
  6. Review the exported file. The Id column contains your UserRole IDs — these will be used as the matching key in Step 3.

Step 2: Prepare the Update CSV File

Open the exported file and add a new column for the new DeveloperName (API Name) values. Populate the new API names for each UserRole record you want to update. Save the updated data as a new CSV file.

Step 3: Upload Updated API Names via Data Loader

  1. Log in to Salesforce Data Loader.
  2. Select the Update command.
  3. Check "Show all Salesforce Objects."
  4. Select the Role (UserRole) object, choose your new CSV file, and click Next.
  5. Map Role ID (Id) and DeveloperName with the corresponding Role ID and New API Name columns from your CSV file.
  6. Save the mapping and click Finish.
  7. Review the generated Success and Error files to confirm all updates completed as expected.

Note: The steps above also apply to mass updating other UserRole fields using Data Loader.
