Account Engagement Handlebars Merge Language (HML) FAQ

Publiseringsdato: Sep 30, 2025
Beskrivelse
As of June 12, 2020, Handlebars Merge Language is on by default for all new Account Engagement accounts. For accounts where it is not yet enabled, Account Engagement admins can permanently upgrade from Account Engagement Merge Language (PML) to Handlebars Merge Language (HML) for personalizing Account Engagement marketing assets. This article is primary about the upgrade from one to the other. If your account is already using HML, much of this information may not be relevant.

Note that landing pages and forms do not need to be upgraded or converted the way other assets do after customers enable HML.

  1. What are the benefits of HML?
There are a few key benefits to upgrading to HML:
    • Better workflows. Because Salesforce Lightning Templates already use HML, switching to HML in Account Engagement helps simplify workflows for marketing users.
    • An updated merge field picker. HML’s new and improved merge field picker makes it easier to find what you’re looking for. Use the search box, or browse and navigate by category.
    • Conditional content statements. To render default content when a prospect record doesn’t contain a certain value, use HML’s simple conditional logic statements in Account Engagement marketing assets.
    • Get set up for success. HML gives us a stronger platform than the legacy merge language, so we can develop more advanced personalization features in the future.
    • Use the new Account Engagement Lightning Email Builder and Landing Page Builder. A prerequisite in being able to use the new Account Engagement Lightning Email Builder and Lightning Landing Page Builder is having HML enabled so by upgrading to HML, it will allow use of this new functionality once configured.
  2. How do I upgrade?
If your account uses the legacy merge language and you're an Account Engagement admin, you can upgrade from the dashboard in your account. Look for the upgrade banner, click Get Started, and then Upgrade to HML. If you do not see this banner, it means the account is already using HML and no further steps are needed.
  3. Will I be forced to upgrade to HML?
Not yet. Currently, we don’t have a date planned to retire PML. However, upcoming feature enhancements are built on HML. We encourage you to start using HML as soon as you can so you can take advantage of the benefits.
  4. Where can I use HML in Account Engagement?
HML is available in Account Engagement email templates, list emails, 1:1 emails, dynamic content, user signatures, landing pages, and forms. In Salesforce, HML is available for Engage emails.
  5. Will I lose any functionality if I upgrade to HML?
Most users can upgrade to HML without losing any functionality. In this use case, it may be best to wait or investigate further before you upgrade:
    • The Account Engagement API supports both PML and HML for list emails and 1:1 email sends. If you or a third-party uses API functionality, look into any changes you may need to make before you upgrade.
    • For full details on HML's functionality, refer to our guidelines documentation
  6. What happens to my PML assets?
No changes here! All your existing PML content is still in your account, and you can continue to edit it with PML. Dynamic content blocks that contain PML tags can be used in all new and existing assets. When you copy or use a PML asset, we’ll help you quickly convert all your PML tags to HML with a built-in conversion tool.
  7. How do I convert all my assets to HML after I upgrade?
Each asset can be converted individually when you’re ready to use it. All you have to do to convert is click a button, and we take care of the rest. If any issues arise, the conversion tool tells you what needs attention.  Note that landing pages and forms do not need to be converted after upgrading.
  8. If I upgrade, what happens when I create a new asset?
After you upgrade, all new assets must use HML and you’ll only see the HML merge field picker on content editors.
  9. If I upgrade, what happens when I copy a PML asset?
Each time you copy an asset that supports HML, the conversion tool pops up to help you switch.
  10. What if I have an active Engagement Studio program, completion action, or automation rule that uses a PML template?
No problem. Active Engagement Studio programs, completion actions, and automation rules continue to function normally and you can convert your PML templates when you’re ready.
  11. Are there any differences between PML and HML?
Yes. You won’t lose any functionality with HML, but there are a few differences to be aware of, such as the format. Learn more about the differences here.
  12. Are there any limitations with HML?
There’s a limit of 200 HML merge fields and 10 pieces of dynamic content in an email or email template. If you’re upgrading an asset that exceeds these limits, we’ll ask you to remove some PML tags before we can convert it to HML.
  13. Will my default merge values still work if I upgrade?
Yes. However, default fields function differently with HML’s conditional content statements. Conditional HML #if tags within merge fields let you specify content to be shown when a prospect doesn’t have any information for that field. If you’ve specified a default value for a field, the default value will populate instead of the conditional content from your if/else statement.
  14. How do I use modifiers? Is it any different from PML?
Modifiers work mostly the same with HML as with PML, with one exception. With HML, modifiers aren’t needed for merge fields contained in links.
  15. How does link tracking work with HML?
Link tracking works the same with HML as it does with PML.
  16. How can I disable HML after I upgrade?
Upgrading to HML is a permanent change and cannot be undone nor disabled once upgraded.
