You can create specific segments based on prospects’ preferences but still keep a small number of lists on your email preference center.

For example, your company may participate in many events throughout the year. You want your prospects to be able to opt-in to communication about your events, but you don’t want to clutter your EPC with a list for each individual event.

You can streamline this process using the steps below.

1) Create a few high-level static lists to be used on your email preference center.

Think of these lists as buckets of preferences, like “Product Updates,” “Newsletters,” “Blog Posts,” or “Events.” This bucketed approach makes it easier for prospects to select their preferences by reducing clutter on your preference center. It also makes segmenting in Account Engagement more flexible, as you can use this list membership as criteria in Account Engagement automations later.

Using the example above, if you were creating an email recipient list for an upcoming event in Atlanta, you could create a dynamic list with criteria: prospect public list opt-in status: is not opted out : “Events” and prospect default field: state: is Georgia.

2) Create dynamic lists using “Prospect public list opt-in status” as your list criteria.

You can use the membership of the bucketed lists created in step one to create more specific segments of prospects. To do this, create dynamic lists. Use “prospect public list opt-in status” as one of your criteria to identify prospects who have opted into or out of a static lists on your email preference center. Then, add additional criteria as needed to create a more specific segment.

Using the example above, if you were creating an email recipient list for an upcoming event in Atlanta, you could create a dynamic list with criteria: prospect public list opt-in status: is “Events” and prospect default field: state: is Georgia.

Following these guidelines and best practices, you may have around three to ten bucketed lists on your email preference center but could have dozens of dynamic lists that reference these bucketed lists in their criteria.
