Prerequisites

What are NAICS and SIC Codes?

NAICS - The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.

NAICS Codes have six digits and a hierarchical structure and it is important to note that there are 5 different levels to NAICS codes. These codes get more specific the higher in the level that you go. For example, Level 1 would be Manufacturing and Level 5 would be Adhesive Manufacturing. The level you chose will depend on the prospects you are targeting.
  • Level 1 - Sector
  • Level 2 - Sub Sector
  • Level 3 - Industry Group
  • Level 4 - North American Industry
  • Level 5 - US Industry

SIC - The Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) is a system for classifying industries by a four-digit code. SIC codes can be grouped into 4 broader groups such as industry, industry group, major group, and division.
  • Level 1- Division
  • Level 2- Major Group
  • Level 3- Industry Group
  • Level 4- Industry

NAICS vs SIC

  • NAICS: Groups together establishments that use the same or similar processes to produce goods or services. Actively used for government statistical purposes
  • SIC Codes: Groups together establishments based on either demand or production. Actively used for business targeting in the private sector

How to Filter by Them

NAICS Filter:
  1. Create a new Business Data Layer and once you get to the 3rd step (Filter Your Layer) and scroll to NAICS and choose the level you would like to use. Again, you will use these codes to target who you are wanting to prospect.
  2. You will notice that you will have two options for each level and one is followed by code. If you select the option with code it will allow you to type in the exact NAICS code (found easily through an online search, ex: "What is the NAICS code for Manufacturing"). If you select the option without code it will allow you to type in the industry and select from a list of values.

SIC filter:
  1. Create a new Business Data Layer and once you get to the 3rd step (Filter Your Layer) and scroll to SIC and choose the level you would like to use.
  2. You will notice that you will have two options for each level and one is followed by code. If you select the option with code it will allow you to type in the exact SIC code (found easily through an online search, ex: "What is the SIC code for Agriculture"). If you select the option without code it will allow you to type in the division (SIC Divisions are structured in an ABC type fashion > Ex: Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing = Division A) and select from a list of values.
