Salesforce CPQ Renewal Opportunity has no Opportunity Products

Custom automation used to renew contracts can introduce renewal issues such as generating renewal opportunities without products from the existing contract in Salesforce CPQ. Time-Based Workflow Actions either on creation or on an established time frame is a common cause for missing products when renewing a contract. The custom automation can encounter Apex Limit errors if there is too much computational overhead from custom processes. Often organizations try to accomplish a sequence of automation to set the Status of a Contract to Activated and set Renewal Forecast/Renewal Quoted to TRUE (via Workflow) on a Contract after a Contract is created via CPQ.

It is not supported to have workflows that make renewal quoted/renewal forecasted TRUE on Contract creation if contract creation with CPQ is asynchronous (Contract in Foreground in the managed package settings is marked FALSE).

The field update will renew the Contract before Subscriptions are created, resulting in Renewal Opportunities without renewed Opportunity Products.

Automation around CPQ Renewals

Depending on the amount of Contracts your organization creates with CPQ, organizations can use Time-Based Workflow Actions either on creation or on an established time frame before other criteria such as Contract End Date.

The Workflow Rule that sets "Renewal Forecast" could be time based and run at least 5 to 10 minutes after contract creation. However, it is useful to note that depending on the amount of Contracts your organization creates with CPQ, and the amount of other automaton involved on all associated records may run the risk of reaching Apex Limits.  This is because all time-dependent actions are grouped into a single batch that starts executing within one hour after the first action enters the batch.
