Not Able to Associate a Lead to an Existing Contact When a Lead is Converted in Salesforce

Fecha de publicación: Jul 2, 2026
Descripción

When converting a Salesforce Lead and associating it with an existing Account, Salesforce should prompt you to associate the Lead with an existing Contact if a duplicate Contact exists and you have read access to that Contact record.

If this prompt does not appear, the active Matching Rule used by the Contact Duplicate Rule did not identify the records as duplicates. This commonly occurs when the Contact Matching Rule does not evaluate the First Name or Last Name fields.

To enable Salesforce to identify duplicate Contacts during Lead conversion, create a Matching Rule and Duplicate Rule that evaluate Contact names.

Solución

The following steps explain how to create a Matching Rule and Duplicate Rule in Salesforce to identify duplicate Contacts by name. Once these rules are active, the Lead conversion process can display existing Contacts as association options when duplicates are detected.

Create the Matching Rule

The following steps apply to both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience. In Lightning Experience, access Setup by clicking the Gear icon.

  1. Navigate to Setup and enter Matching Rules in the Quick Find box.

  2. Click Matching Rules and select New Rule.

  3. Select Contact as the object and click Next.

  4. Enter a Rule Name.

  5. Add the following matching criteria:

    • Field: First Name | Matching Method: Exact

    • Field: Last Name | Matching Method: Exact

  6. Click Save.

  7. Click Activate.

Create the Duplicate Rule

The following steps apply to both Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience.

  1. Navigate to Setup and enter Duplicate Rules in the Quick Find box.

  2. Click Duplicate Rules and select New Rule.

  3. Select Contact as the object.

  4. Enter a Rule Name.

  5. Set Record-Level Security to Bypass Sharing Rules.

  6. Set Action on Create to Block.

  7. Select the Matching Rule created in the previous section.

  8. Click Save.

  9. Activate the Duplicate Rule.

Once both rules are active, attempt the Lead conversion again. If a matching Contact exists, Salesforce will display the option to associate the Lead with the existing Contact record.
