Not able to associate a Lead to an existing Contact when a Lead is converted

When converting a Lead and associate it to an existing Account, if there is an existing Contact (and there is read access to the record), the next page should prompt to attach to the existing Contact record. However, even if there is a duplicate and there is read access , there is no option to associate it to an existing Contact. 

This happens when a Matching Rule on an active Duplicate Rule for Contacts hasn't identified the records as duplicate because said records didn't meet the criteria of those Matching Rules.

The solution is to create a Matching Rule that checks the basic information of the Contact record by using the First name field or the Last name field.

To do this, create a Matching Rule and Duplicate Rule to look for Duplicate Names:

Create the Matching Rule in Salesforce Classic

1. Click Setup.
2. Enter Matching Rules on the Quick Find box.
3. Click on Matching Rules.
4. Click on New Rule.
5. For the object, select Contact.
6. Click Next.
7. Enter a Rule Name.
8. For the field, select First Name.
9. For the Matching Method, select Exact.
10. Select another field, choose Last Name.
11. For the Matching Method, select Exact.
12. Click Save.
13. Click Activate

Create the Duplicate Rule in Salesforce Classic

1. Click Setup.
2. Enter Duplicate Rules on the Quick Find box.
3. Click on Duplicate Rules.
4. Click New Rule.
5. Select Contact.
6. Enter a Rule Name.
7. For the Record Level Security, select Bypass sharing rules.
8. For Action on Create, select Block.
9. On the Matching Rule, select the one we created above.
10. Click Save.

 
Create the Matching Rule in Lighting Experience

1. Click the gear icon and then click Setup.
2. Enter Matching Rules on the Quick Find box.
3. Click on Matching Rules.
4. Click on New Rule.
5. For the object, select Contact.
6. Click Next.
7. Enter a Rule Name.
8. For the field, select First Name.
9. For the Matching Method, select Exact.
10. Select another field, choose Last Name.
11. For the Matching Method, select Exact.
12. Click Save.
13. Click Activate
