'Error: Bad value for restricted picklist field: [field name]' with new record creation in CPQ

In Salesforce CPQ, the error message 'Error: Bad value for restricted picklist field: [field name]' appears in the Configuration screen or when CPQ Twin Fields exist between two picklist fields on the Product Option object and the Quote Line object, and one field is restricted from setting the new value.

When Mapping Custom Fields Between Objects in Salesforce CPQ, you may see the following error when creating a new record:

'Error: Bad value for restricted picklist field: [field name]' 

This error can appear if the values used between the two picklist fields do not match during field mapping between the product option and quote line objects. Below are scenarios where this may occur:

Potential causes include:

  • Picklist value is not available on object record types
  • Picklist value entry is missing or inactive
  • One object uses a Global Picklist, but the other object uses a Custom Picklist


Example: Payment Terms on the quote is using a custom picklist, but Payment Terms on the Order object uses a global picklist, which is by default restricted.  Since the Payment Term on the Quote is custom, a user can add a new value, which results in this error due to generating an Order with picklist values that do not match.
