Why should I encode files as UTF-8?

Not all programs and applications display special characters in the same way. To ensure that all special characters are displayed correctly it is important that all files that are imported into Account Engagement are UTF-8 encoded. This is especially important when importing data in languages that do not use the English alphabet, such as Kanji or Greek.

How do I encode as UTF-8?

This can be done when saving your Excel file as a .csv.
 
Every version of Excel is different, so UTF-8 encoding will be applied slightly differently depending on the version you are running and on whether you are working on a Mac or PC. In caertain versions of Excel you can encode when you save the file. To do this, navigate to Tools > Web Options > Encoding, and then select 'Unicode (UTF-8)' from the 'Save this document as' dropdown.
 
Some versions of Microsoft Excel (including Excel 2011 for Mac) may not support UTF-8 encoding, so you might want to use another application to save your files.
 
OpenOffice is a free, open-source software that allows files to be saved as UTF-8 encoded .csvs. To save as UTF-8 in OpenOffice click 'save as', select 'Text CSV (.csv)' from the 'file type' dropdown, tick the 'edit filter settings' box and click save.  After hitting 'save' a box will pop up called 'Export text file', here you can select 'Unicode (UTF-8)' in the 'Character set' dropdown.
 
Google Spreadsheets is a free web-based alternative that can do the same.
 
Numbers for Mac is another paid alternative for Apple users.
 
Note: If you notice that characters are displaying incorrectly when you export a table it is because the original data was not imported in UTF-8.
