Use default 'Lead Source' picklist values a new Opportunity from the Contact object is created

Fecha de publicación: Jul 3, 2026
Descripción

When a user selects a Contact under an Account record and creates a new Opportunity from the Contact's Opportunities related list, Salesforce automatically populates the Opportunity's Lead Source field with the same value as the Contact's Lead Source field, instead of using the default Lead Source picklist value. This is expected product behavior.

Reproduction Steps

  1. Click on a Contact record.

  2. Navigate to the Opportunities related list.

  3. Click New Opportunity.

  4. Observe that the Opportunity Lead Source field is automatically populated with the Contact's Lead Source value instead of the default picklist value.

To work around this behavior, create the Opportunity from another location, such as the Account record or the Opportunity tab.

Solución

When a new Opportunity is created from a Contact's related list, Salesforce automatically inherits the Contact's Lead Source value instead of using the default picklist value. This is expected product behavior.

To prevent this behavior, you can create a custom Quick Action on the Contact object that allows the Lead Source field to remain blank when creating a new Opportunity.

Follow the steps below for Salesforce Classic and Lightning Experience.

Salesforce Classic

Step 1: Create a New Quick Action

  1. Click Setup.

  2. Navigate to Build | Customize | Contact | Buttons, Links, and Actions.

  3. Click New Action and configure the following:

    • Action Type: Create a Record

    • Target Object: Opportunity

    • Relationship Field: Contact

    • Record Type: Select the desired record type

    • Label: New Opportunity

  4. Click Save.

  5. Add the Lead Source field to the Action Layout.

  6. Click Save.

Step 2: Add the Action to the Contact Page Layout

  1. Navigate to Contact Page Layouts.

  2. Select the desired page layout.

  3. Click Quick Actions.

  4. Drag the New Opportunity action into the Actions in the Salesforce Classic Publisher section.

  5. Click Save.

Step 3: Create an Opportunity Using the Quick Action

  1. Open a Contact record.

  2. Click Show Feed.

  3. Select the New Opportunity quick action.

  4. Verify that the Lead Source field is blank.

  5. Click Save.

The new Opportunity will not inherit the Contact's Lead Source value.

Lightning Experience

Step 1: Create a New Quick Action

  1. Click Setup.

  2. Navigate to Object Manager | Contacts | Buttons, Links, and Actions.

  3. Click New Action and configure the following:

    • Target Object: Opportunity

    • Relationship Field: Contact

    • Record Type: Select the desired record type

    • Label: New Opportunity

  4. Click Save.

  5. Add the Lead Source field to the Action Layout.

  6. Click Save.

Step 2: Add the Action to the Contact Page Layout

  1. Navigate to Contact Page Layouts.

  2. Select the desired page layout.

  3. Open Mobile and Lightning Actions.

  4. Drag the New Opportunity action into the Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions section.

  5. Click Save.

Step 3: Create an Opportunity Using the Quick Action
