Salesforce Assignment Rules, Inline Editing, and Page Layout Limitations

Date de publication: Jun 11, 2026
Description

This article explains the necessary configuration and limitations of using inline editing and assignment rules.   Lead/Case assignment rules' behavior when using inline editing depends on the settings of the page layout in question. In addition, other save options, such as Change Owner Notifications, won’t fire with inline editing. This article also applies to territory-account assignment rules.

Résolution

Scenario 1: Show on Edit Page and Default Both Enabled

Page layout has both "Show on edit page" and "Default" enabled for Assignment rules on Layout Properties.

This configuration will not ‌execute assignment rules in Lightning and Classic with inline edit. With this configuration, assignment rules will only be executed under normal edit mode.

Scenario 2: Show on Edit Page Disabled, Default Enabled

Page layout has "Show on edit page" disabled and "Default" enabled for Assignment rules on Layout Properties.

This configuration will not execute assignment rules in Lightning, but will execute in Classic with inline edit.

In both scenarios, assignment rules do not execute during inline editing in Lightning Experience. To ensure assignment rules fire, users must edit records in standard edit mode.

Note: This applies to leads, cases, and territory-account assignment rules.
