Using an Account Engagement number field as a counter

Before you begin, you must create a custom field with the field type set to number and decide to use automation rules or completion actions: 

Automation Rules only run one time by default. If you want to increment a field by 1 if Whitepaper A is downloaded, it only counts one time. It won’t increment again if the prospect downloads Whitepaper A again. This behavior can be changed by using the "repeat rule" option

Completion Actions are best used to count each time an action is completed. If you want to increment a prospect field by 1 each time they download Whitepaper A, a completion action fires each time the prospect downloads. If they download the whitepaper 3 times, the prospect field value is 3.

1. Create an automation rule.

2. In the Rules section set-up the criteria you want to use to increment.

3. In the Actions section, choose Increment prospect field value as the action, choose your custom field, and enter the increment value.
 

We recommend the following criteria is used when the rule is created. The automation rule increments the 'Counter Field' by 1 if the prospect has accessed any file.

1. Add a completion action to a form, form handler, file, custom redirect, email, or page action.

2. Choose Increment prospect field value as the action, choose your custom field, choose + or -, and enter the increment value.

If the following criteria is used when the rule is created, the completion action increments the "Counter Field" by 1 each time the prospect fills out this form.

Completion Actions
