Encrypt Custom Fields with Shield Platform Encryption

Encrypt custom fields on standard objects in Classic

1. Navigate to Setup.
2. Select Customize.
3. Choose Object.
4. Select Custom Field.
5. Select Edit.
6. Check the Box Next to Encrypt.
7. Click Save.

Encrypt custom fields on custom objects

1. Navigate to Setup.
2. Select Create.
3. Select Your Custom Object.
4. Select Custom Field.
5. Select Edit.
6. Check the Box Next to Encrypt.
7. Click Save.

Encrypt Custom Fields on Standard/Custom Objects in Lightning

1. Navigate to Setup.
2. Select Object and Fields - Object Manager.
3. Select object.
4. Select Field and Relationship.
5. Click on Field Name
6. Select Edit and check the box next to Encrypt.
7. Click Save.

NOTE:
- Formula & Reference fields cannot be encrypted.
- After marking all fields for encryption if historical data is present you will need to export and import records to trigger a full encryption of data at rest or log a case with Salesforce Support to have a back end encryption job processed. As of Spring '19 you can now also perform this encryption Sync yourself using the Self service option found here: Sync Data with Self-Service Background Encryption
