What are Email Service Addresses?

Email service addresses are long, auto-generated unique email addresses that Salesforce automatically creates for the following features:

  • Email-to-Case: Routes incoming customer emails to Salesforce Cases automatically
  • Email-to-Salesforce: Logs emails sent from external clients into Salesforce records
  • Salesforce Apex classes: Email service addresses created programmatically via Salesforce Apex (Salesforce's proprietary programming language) to handle inbound email processing

These addresses act as the gateway for routing incoming emails into Salesforce.

Example Scenario

A Salesforce administrator using Email-to-Case notices that the auto-generated email service address is very long (for example: casemgmt=sfdc.com@to.salesforce.com). The administrator wants to shorten this address to meet their email server's filter rules or to use a custom domain name. This article explains why this is not possible and what options exist.

Why Email Service Addresses Cannot Be Changed

Email service addresses are read-only and automatically generated by Salesforce. Salesforce users have no control over the logic used to generate these addresses.
The generation process is designed to guarantee that each email service address is globally unique. Because of this uniqueness requirement, manual edits, shortening, or any form of customization is not currently supported.

Current Behavior

This is expected behavior. Email service addresses are system-generated identifiers and function similarly to a Salesforce record ID — they are unique, immutable, and managed entirely by the Salesforce platform.
